Winter check for cars and vans
With the changing weather NCI vehicle rescue advise drivers to make sure they have prepared their vehicle for winter. Below are a few useful tips for our members.
Tyres
Regular checks on tyre pressure and tread depth are essential; we recommend every couple of weeks. Look at the tyre and check for cuts, splits and nails that can cause deflation. Also check your spare tyre
Water
Coolant levels should be checked regularly and topped up when needed, only check levels and top up when the engine is cold. Antifreeze concentration needs checking before it starts getting frosty.
Battery
Ensure the battery is efficient as demand on a battery is very high during the winter months.
Lights
Check all lights are working correctly. Clean them, as winter conditions will cover them in grime and dirt and reduce their efficiency dramatically.
Engine Oil
Check your dipstick regularly and especially before long journeys.
Windscreen
Make sure there are no cracks or serious chips. Wipers should not leave smears; if they do they may need replacing. Ensure windscreen wash fluid levels are topped up regularly.
Breakdown cover
Make sure you have a good level of breakdown cover, as you do not want to be stranded at the roadside in cold wet conditions.
