French breathalyser fines postponed until next year

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists, fines for drivers who are caught not carrying breathalyser kit will be implemented from March 2013 in France, as opposed to November 1st 2012. Travellers to France now have more time to prepare.
An €11 fine will be issued to motorists in France who are not carrying a breathalyser kit in their car. The fine will be applicable to all road users except for those on mopeds.

According to IAM, “single-use breathalyser kits will satisfy the requirement. The legal limit in France is 50 mg per 100 ml of blood, lower than in the UK (the UK limit is 80mg). They cost between £1 and £2 and they will be available at ferry and tunnel terminals for crossings to France.”

Motorists will have to be able to test themselves using the breathalyser kit to check that they are not over the French limit.

Neil Greig, director of policy and research said: “The new French rule is a genuine attempt to reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents. France’s lower limit means it’s very easy to be over the limit the morning after as well. As always, the best advice for road users is not to drink and drive at all.”

Travelling to France?

If you’re travelling to France via car before March 2013 then you’ll still need to prepare. Existing laws require motorists to carry warning triangles, fluorescent jackets, spare light bulbs and GB stickers.
