Motorists urged to ‘take extra care’ in the snow

Date posted: January 15, 2013

Drivers are being urged to take extreme care on the roads throughout this week, ahead of potentially heavy snow showers later today, with temperatures dropping to -8C in some areas. The Met Office has issued an amber warning, asking people to “be prepared” for icy road conditions and snowy spats.

Dangerous driving conditions led to a three-vehicle accident yesterday on the A67 in Morpeth; luckily there were no serious injuries but it goes without saying that all motorists need to be fully prepared for potentially treacherous road conditions.

Advice for making sure your car is ready for the snow has been given by Essex Police, who say that motorists should ensure their anti-freeze is topped up, wiper blades are working properly and tyre pressures are checked.

They also advise drivers to carry a blanket in the car, in the event of a car breakdown.

Chief Inspector Justin Smith said: “The advice is still to make sure your vehicle is winter ready, give it a once over check and that you have plenty of fuel.

“Remember that the roads can be very icy and you need to drive cautiously, reducing your speed and allowing extra time to brake.”
