Top selling cars in January 2014

This January, car registrations for new cars increased by nearly eight percent year on year according to statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. What’s more, alternative fuel vehicles are on the rise with sales increasing by 25 percent, and with the cost of fuel increasing diesel cars have marginally outsold petrol vehicles.

Of the 154,562 models registered, the most popular new car was the Ford Fiesta, followed by its slightly larger sister car the Ford Focus.

The full list sees the usual familiar makes and models, with two Fords, two Volkswagens, two Nissans and two Vauxhall cars dominating the list. The ever-popular mini Fiat 500 still is holding strong, coming in tenth position with 2,595 cars sold.

Eighth and ninth are Nissan’s Qashqai and Juke models, two models from their crossover range which are an unusual hybrid between a 4X4 and city car. Combined, more than 5,700 of these cars were sold.

What’s interesting about the list is that all the cars fall into the small car category: models that are cheaper to buy and more cost-effective to run than their larger counter-parts. With the total cost of running a car coming into play when consumers buy a new car, the top ten are some of the most cost-effective cars on the market right now.
